Incident Type: Rescue

On Saturday afternoon, one of our Duty Controllers picked up an activation from the North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (NEAS) regarding two casualties who had fallen to the west of Walltown. One of the casualties had sustained a potentially serious injury.

While the reported location appeared to be close to the road, access to the scene and the surrounding terrain was uncertain. With NEAS resources over 50 minutes away, the duty controller placed both ourselves and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team on standby and deployed local team members to check access and provide immediate care.

Team members made their way to the scene, supported by additional vehicles from across the county. Shortly after arrival, it was confirmed that the casualties had managed to make their way back to their car and were being assessed by the NEAS Community Paramedic, with no further mountain rescue assistance required.

Both teams were stood down at 15:46, just after the full callout message had been issued. We wish both casualties a swift recovery.

This incident highlights how Mountain Rescue teams work closely with the ambulance service to ensure help is available as quickly as possible — particularly in rural and remote areas where access can be challenging.

The incident involved 28 team members for 1 hour.
