Incident Type: Rescue
Early on Saturday evening, ourselves and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team were activated by Northumbria Police for a teenage walker near the summit of The Cheviot who had sustained a lower leg injury and was unable to weight bear.
With a SARLOC location fix confirming the remote site and a long stretcher carry likely, a full callout of both teams was initiated. Vehicles and personnel deployed from across the area, with Curlew Echo able to get up onto Scald Hill thanks to exceptionally dry ground conditions.
Team members reached the casualty at 19:10hrs, provided medical treatment, and packaged him on a stretcher for evacuation. The descent involved rope protection on steep ground before attaching the wheel to the stretcher for the final stage.
By 21:16hrs the casualty was safely at the Scald Hill, where he was transported in Key Mobile down to the Harthope Valley to be reunited his parents for onward travel to hospital.
Our team leader, Jamie Pattison commended: “It’s been an incredibly busy summer for both ourselves and North of Tyne MRT, but I’m continually impressed by the resilience and dedication of our volunteers. Regardless of the time, place or weather, they drop everything to help others and do so with incredible skill, compassion and teamwork.”
A smooth, well-coordinated operation made possible by excellent teamwork — thank you to every volunteer who responded during this busy period.
The incident involved 23 members for 6 hours 6 minutes.
