Incident Type: Rescue

In the early hours of Saturday morning, ourselves and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team were simultaneously activated by Northumbria Police and North East Ambulance Service NHS

Foundation Trust for a multi-agency incident on the coast near South Shields. Police, Ambulance, South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) and Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team were already on scene and the National Police Air Service HQ helicopter was overflying the incident. A Maritime and Coastguard Agency search and rescue helicopter from Prestwick had also been requested.

A limited response was initiated by one of our duty controllers. Rope rescue technicians from both teams were deployed, along with some additional personnel and three response vehicles on blue lights.

As Mountain Rescue resources arrived at the RVP, it was confirmed that Rescue 199 from Prestwick had successfully conducted the rescue. At this point the teams stood down.

With temperatures below 0C and a windchill of -8C, our volunteers were pleased that incident ended quickly.

The incident involved 16 Team members for 2 hours 47 minutes.
