Incident Type: Rescue
A walker was out early on Saturday morning with their dog on Lordenshaws when they slipped on grass near the hill fort. The walker heard a loud crack as they fell to the ground.
Northumbria Police alerted ourselves and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team at just before 08.00hrs and a response was swiftly enacted. Our 4×4 response vehicle, Curlew Echo, was swiftly off the mark with two volunteer members on board with other local volunteers not far behind.
Within 20 minutes of initial activation, Mountain Rescue resources were on scene with the injured walker. The walker assessed by a Team Paramedic before their lower leg was immobilised using a vacuum splint. They were then transported off the hill in our response vehicle before being handed over at just before 09.00hrs to the North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust at Lordenshaws car park for onward transport to hospital.
A swift and straight forward rescue. We wish the walker well for a full recovery and all being well they’ll be out walking their dog again very soon.
The incident involved 9 Team members for 1 hour 29 minutes. A further 7 members were stood down while travelling to the incident.
