Incident Type: Rescue

A couple staying in Northumberland on holiday decided to do ‘the round’ from the Harthope valley of The Cheviot and Hedgehope Hill. Having climbed over The Cheviot, and with worsening weather, they decided to make for lower ground. Unsure of exactly where they were, they phoned 999 for help.

A collective effort from several of North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team’s and our duty controllers led to a swift and coordinated response. A PhoneFind text sent to one of the walker’s mobiles successfully fixed location in the upper Harthope valley. The walkers were reassured that we knew where they were and advised to head downstream to Langleeford Hope, an uninhabited estate cottage at the end of a 4×4 track.

Two of our 4×4 response vehicles were deployed, one as back up, and shortly after 16.00hrs, the walkers were safely located. An emotional day for the two walkers and their terrier dog was very relieved to be out of the deteriorating weather.

A good, swift outcome for all concerned particularly given the prevailing weather. Earlier in the day the walkers had seen one of our AdventureSmart signs, funded by the Safer Streets project, and consequently knew exactly what to do in their hour of need.

The incident involved 9 Team members for 2 hours 20 minutes.
