Incident Type: Rescue
At 14:18hrs on Thursday afternoon, our selves and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team were contacted by Northumbria Police to assist two walkers who had become lost in Holystone Forest.
Using PhoneFind technology, our Duty Controller was able to confirm their location quickly. Although both walkers were uninjured, they were tired and beginning to feel the effects of being out in cold conditions. They did the right thing by stopping and calling for help rather than attempting to continue and risk becoming more disorientated.
A limited callout was initiated, with nearby team members deploying to the forest. Vehicles were able to get close to the walkers’ location, and once on scene, our team provided shelter, warmth, and an assessment. After spending time in a group shelter and using heat packs and additional insulation, both walkers recovered sufficiently to walk out with assistance.
As a precaution, additional team members were placed on standby to provide further support if required, but were later stood down once it was clear the situation was resolving safely.
This was a great example of how early decision-making and staying put can help bring incidents to a safe and positive conclusion.
If you find yourself lost or unsure of your route, stop, stay where you are, and call for help. Carrying extra warm layers and a means of communication can make a significant difference while waiting for assistance.
