A walker sustained a lower leg injury and was unable to weight bear whilst they were enjoying a day on the Hadrian’s Wall Path on Friday afternoon. A North East Ambulance Service Community Paramedic requested Mountain Rescue’s support to help evacuate the walker to the nearest road access.

The Mountain Rescue Duty Controller used PhoneFind to confirm the injured party’s location. They were between Steel Rigg and Hotbank Farm on the section of Hadrian’s Wall above Crag Lough. Two blue light response vehicles were swiftly deployed along with members from our Team and of North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team.

With the casualty already stabilised by the Community Paramedic, the Teams placed the walker in a winter casualty bag - a very warm, fluffy sleeping bag - and onto a Bell stretcher for the carry down to the track that leads to Hotbank Farm. The casualty was then handed over to the crewed Ambulance for onward transport to hospital.

We wish the casualty well for a full and swift recovery.

The involved 16 Team members for 3 hours 15 minutes.
