Incident Type: Rescue

On Sunday, ourselves and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team were notified that a woman sustained a leg injury while climbing over a stone wall at the summit of Grey Nag, above the River South Tyne. Unable to weight bear, she and her walking group did the right thing and called 999 to ask for Mountain Rescue. The call was initially directed to Cumbria Police before being transferred to Northumbria Police.

Although both teams were notified, we had members training in a nearby area and were able to dispatch two emergency vehicles to the scene.

As our volunteers were arriving on scene, we were advised that the casualty had made it off the hill with the assistance of the Police and a local farmer. One of our remote rescue medical technicians assessed the casualty and discharged her into the care of the Police for transport to Hexham Hospital.

We wish the walker well for a full and swift recovery, and would like to thank her walking group for looking after her and the farmer for their assistance in extricating the injured woman.

The incident involved 7 Team members for 1 hour 45 minutes. A further 17 members were held at the training RVP in readiness to deploy.
