Incident Type: Rescue

On Thursday afternoon, Northumbria Police requested mountain rescue assistance from ourselves and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team for an injured walker. A male had fallen and had sustained a lower leg injury. The male was with a walking group on Cunyan Crags in the Breamish Valley. The injured walker was unable to walk any further.

Our Duty Controller initiated a limited response. A Phonefind confirmed the casualty’s location, which was immediately below Cunyan Crags. A team vehicle was dispatched from Rothbury; whilst enroute to the Breamish valley, contact was made with the Linhope Estate to confirm the best access route up onto the hill. Given the dry conditions, the Estate advised that it should be possible to drive all the way to the casualty’s location in a 4×4.

As our 4×4 vehicle made its way to the casualty’s location, the duty controller arranged for a small number of local members to rendezvous in the valley in case additional assistance was required. The Teams were also put on standby just in case a long stretcher carry was required.

At 16:20hrs Curlew Echo – one of our Toyota Hilux response vehicles – made it all the way to the casualty site. Following an assessment, it was agreed that the casualty and his two companions would be able to travel in Echo off the hill. Those not on scene were able to be stood down.

A big thank you to Linhope Estates for their support.

The incident involved 6 volunteers members for 3 hours 9 minutes with an additional 4 members on standby in readiness to deploy if required.
