Incident Type: Rescue
A group of middle school students were out in the College Valley learning about conservation with the Estate and Northumberland National Park, and safety in the hills and Mountain Rescue with two of our members. During a short walk one of the students suddenly collapsed and became unresponsive. Our members – both Remote Rescue Medical Technicians – provided immediate care and protected the student from the environment.
When the student’s condition did not improve, Northumbria Police and Mountain Rescue were formally alerted. Given the proximity to the valley road, a limited response from North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves was initiated.
Once one of our 4×4 response vehicles arrived on scene, two of our Paramedics undertook a further assessment of the student before they were packaged on a lightweight Titan stretcher for a short sledge down to the valley road. The student was then handed over to the North East Ambulance Service’s Community Paramedic and double crewed ambulance at about 13.00 hrs.
Thankfully later in the afternoon it was confirmed that the student had made a good recovery and was able to return home.
We would like to thank the rest of the student’s class who were remarkable with their help and understanding of the situation, and they all had a real life learning opportunity!
The incident involved 9 Team members for 3 hours 40 minutes.
