Early on Thursday evening, Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service requested Mountain Rescue’s support for a motorist who’s vehicle was stranded in a ford near the Wooler. Initially the exact location was not known but was soon confirmed as Coldgate Ford, North Middleton. A repeat of an incident last year!

Our Flood and Swiftwater First Responders and Swiftwater Rescue Technicians were called out and one of our 4x4 response vehicles was swiftly deployed on blue lights. Just as our response vehicle arrived on scene, the swiftwater team from Berwick Fire Station had managed to safely extricate the driver from his vehicle using an extendable ladder. Had the ladder not reached the vehicle, a much more complex rescue involving a tethered boat and more personnel would have been required. A great job by the fire crews.

Once safely back on dry land, one of our Mountain Rescue medics checked over the driver before the arrival of a crew from the North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust.

The incident involved 10 Team members for 1 hour 30 minutes
