Coldberry Hill, St Cuthbert’s Way

Incident Type: Rescue

On Thursday afternoon, a walking party contacted Northumbria Police after a young person sustained a lower leg injury while walking along St Cuthbert’s Way, on the northern side of Coldberry Hill and was unable to bear weight or continue walking.

Northumbria Police requested the assistance of ourselves and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team. Our Duty Controller liaised with the Police and spoke directly with the walking party to confirm their location and gather further information. Team members and response vehicles were then deployed towards Humbleton and onto the hill, while both teams were placed on standby in case a stretcher carry was required.

The first team member arrived at the incident site shortly before one of our response vehicles. Following an assessment, it was confirmed that vehicle access was possible and the casualty could be safely transported from the hill without the need for a carry-out.

The young person and the remaining members of the well-equipped walking group were evacuated from the hill and taken back to Wooler. The group was advised to seek further assessment of the injury at Berwick Infirmary.

We wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery.

The incident involved 8 Team members for 2 hours 30 minutes. A further 21 members remained on standby throughout the incident.
