Incident Type: Rescue

North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves were activated by the North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust to assist with a male, who had fallen and sustained a lower leg injury. He had been walking the Hadrian’s Wall National Trail near Housesteads and at the time of the activation was being cared for by an Ambulance crew.

The Mountain Rescue volunteers were called out to meet at Housesteads car park in readiness for a possible stretcher evacuation. As the first team members assembled, one of our 4×4 response vehicles was tasked to assess a possible access route across the hill, towards the casualty site between Clew Hill and Kings Hill. Assisted by the National Park Ranger, our vehicle was able to drive to the casualty.

The casualty was then supported for the few steps to vehicle and a cross-country journey back to the Military Road and onwards to the Ambulance at Housesteads Fort. At this point all other mountain rescue personnel and the NEAS HART team were stood down.

A sad end for the walker’s adventure along the Hadrian’s Wall National Trail and we wish him well for a full and swift recovery. We’d also like to thank the Northumbria Police officer and the

Northumberland National Park Ranger for their invaluable assistance during the incident.

The incident involved 14 Team members for 3 hours 5 minutes.
