Late on Saturday afternoon, North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves were activated by Northumbria Police. A call to the Police had been made by an ultra runner who was training for the Montane Cheviot Goat Ultra after his dog became ill or injured. With the dog unable to continue and the remoteness of their location on the eastern slope of Bloodybush Edge, Mountain Rescue was requested.
With the fantastic support of a local shepherd, the runner and his dog were located and safely evacuated by quad bike to their farm in the upper Breamish valley. Our Mountain Rescue vehicle, Curlew Echo, then transported the runner and his dog back to their accommodation.
Other members had been deployed to Alwinton in case we needed to access the hill from Kidland Forest and to locate the runner’s partner, who was due to meet them in the village.
Thankfully it seems the dog - a Border Collie - is well on the road to recovery.
The incident involved 7 Team members for 2 hours 40 minutes.
